We are looking for a Trusts & Major Giving Officer to join our busy fundraising team located in Drayton, Norwich. It is an exciting time to join a pivotal team within the organisation, with ambitious targets for building the new Priscilla Bacon Hospice. It is essential that we find the right candidate for this role and we can be flexible with working hours.

Funding from Charitable Trusts, Foundations and major donors is crucial to our work. The right person in this new role will enable us to identify and secure funding for the vital work of building Priscilla Bacon Hospice, which will enhance the delivery of palliative care in Norfolk.

We are looking for someone with the ability to write motivating proposals and applications, as the role will involve securing five-to-seven figure sums. The successful candidate will have excellent written, research and application skills, be numerate and have a good understanding of finance. They will be able to demonstrate that they can develop and maintain strong and lasting relationships with funders. They will be creative and well-motivated, as well as a skilled organiser and planner.

The post holder will report to the CEO, whose role also encompasses fundraising and who will continue to take the lead in major gifts and direct appeal fundraising.

Job Description

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

General Research

• Using online funding directories and Web research, develop profiles of target resources e.g. grant-making trusts, foundations, company giving etc.
• Using a variety of online publications/newsletters, keep abreast of changes in voluntary sector trust funding
• Research company and individual profiles using appropriate resources, within current fundraising and data protection regulations
• Develop and update accurate prospect lists
• Build relationships with staff and Board members to ensure a good knowledge of the organisation

Trust Fundraising

• Raise money through applications to various Charitable Trusts and Foundations
• Work in conjunction with the CEO to identify targets
• Based on campaign strategy, contact and draft applications for review by the CEO; once approved submit and follow up applications
• Track and monitor results, including reporting deadlines
• Ensure pipeline of activity is relevant and up to date

Support for the development of other funding applications

• Obtain background information relating to the grant-making or statutory bodies
• Maintain a bank of supporting materials (e.g. health & safety policy, equal opportunities policy, reserves policy) for use with applications
• Administrative support in submission of applications

Support for / involvement in other fundraising initiatives

• Prepare base materials, presentations, supporting packs and tailored prospectuses
• Prepare follow up correspondence
• Meet prospective major donors and trusts
• Be willing to share fundraising ideas

Fundraising Administration

• Maintain fundraising files
• Accurately update the fundraising database
• Liaise with Treasurer / Finance for reconciliation of monies received / spent
• Analyse fundraising performance and report to CEO


• Manage records and systems on CRM software

Administration and Meetings

• Attend meetings, (some may be outside Norfolk), as and when required
• Maintain all trust, company and individual files and records
• Produce fundraising reports

Other Tasks

• Undertake other projects and tasks of a similar nature as and when required

Person Specification

Essential skills:

  • A high standard of written English, with excellent research and application skills
  • Numerate, with an understanding of finance
  • A good working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Accuracy and good attention to detail
  • Well organised, taking a systematic approach
  • Excellent team working skills, with a passion for fundraising
  • Ability to set own work timetable, meet organisational deadlines and keep all finance systems up to date
  • Self-starter and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the confidence to represent the charity to donors

Desirable skills:

  • Experience of managing relationships, (including applications and reporting), with trusts, foundations and institutions
  • Experience of successfully securing five-to-seven figure sums from trusts, foundations and/or individual donors
  • Strong affinity with our cause
  • A flexible and agile mindset
  • An understanding and knowledge of fundraising in Norwich and Norfolk
