Spotlight on young volunteers: Harry’s Story
We wanted to shine a spotlight on the volunteering opportunities we offer to young people, and caught up with 19-year-old Harry.
Harry began volunteering in one of our Charity Shops aged 14, as part of completing a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. He is now at university, but still volunteers with us in his spare time.
We asked him about his experiences, and he told us:
“I have been volunteering with the Priscilla Bacon Hospice Charity for 5 years now, starting through the Duke of Edinburgh’s scheme. During that time, Covid struck, unfortunately removing the chance to finish my award. However, I ended up staying on as a volunteer after lockdown.
I have gained many skills through volunteering; including communication, retail experience, and also a huge boost to my confidence. This all helped to open up future opportunities for me, and has allowed me to study Game Design at university.
Volunteering is a brilliant way to gain new skills and meet new people, whilst giving back to a great cause. I would highly recommend it, as it has given me confidence and skills, whilst being extremely rewarding.”
