Staff trained in CaLMS for Hands to support patients
Eight staff members at Priscilla Bacon Lodge recently trained in the therapeutic approach CaLMS for hands. The workshop was delivered by Sally Chapman, Complementary Therapy Co-Ordinator, and Amanda Harris, Complementary Therapist.
Caring and Light Massage Support (CaLMS) for hands was created and developed by Sally after years of working in palliative care. This gentle, five-minute hand massage technique uses light touch and reflexology points to promote deep relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety.
Sally explained: “It works on the sensory nerve endings in the skin, affecting the part of the brain which initiates deep relaxation, helping to reduce stress and anxiety. It is ideal for fragile patients, those with cancer, and individuals receiving palliative or end-of-life care. Touch is one of the basic forms of communication, yet many of us are afraid to touch those who need it most.”
The workshop proved really successful, receiving 100% positive feedback. One staff member commented, “I will be able to use this as an additional resource when responding to patients and helping to calm them when appropriate. It is very valuable.”
The training is suitable for staff, volunteers, carers, for self-care, or for anyone simply wanting to make a difference to their loved ones.
